Ah, the magic of Facebook, making us believe that the departed are still with us... and they are if we are willing to peer through the windows into Heaven. But I did not realize till today that my friend Bill had fallen asleep in the Lord several months ago, thus I hope it is not too late to share some memories.
We were co-workers and friends back when Bill was at the University of Cincinnati. Reading his obituary reminded me of many things he talked about then, for example his recent (at the time) move from New York, his time in college in North Dakota, which resonated because of my own family ties there, his son's adventures in the Coast Guard, and his Alfa Romeo project car.
Three things stand out in my recollections of Bill:
1) He was excited to be at UC and working with sponsored programs. As he was the newest person hired in before I joined, some of that eagerness was understandable, but he also had a real interest in the work, which carried him forward to Ball State and the University of Washington.
2) He indeed carried himself forward not only in terms of career but education as well. He was working quite hard carrying office duties and MBA studies at the same time, but he had the drive and stamina to do so successfully.
3) I do recall him talking about his time in the Army, not necessarily a lot, but he didn't have to either for a friend to understand how it shaped him. It was a bearing that he had: a discipline to accomplish things in his life and to be there for others.
Bill and I connected only sporadically after he left UC but enough to know in broad terms what was going on with each other. We most recently caught up three years ago or so. He sounded good, and so did Renee'. She would come to visit him on campus, and I enjoyed interacting with them together. My heart goes out to her and their children during this painful time of loss.
Along with my candle offering I ask that the Lord establish the soul of His departed servant William in the mansions of the righteous, give him rest in the bosom of Abraham, and number his soul among the just. May his memory be eternal!

Some things I will never forget.
Driving through the Adirondacks all day and daydreaming out the window, getting happy every time I saw a bubbling brook in mountainside.
You teaching me how to read a map on the way to Aunt Bonnie Muntz-Pope’s in SC when I was 7. I remember it was in a McDonald’s for a pit stop that included coffee and hot cakes. Egg McMuffin for me! Remember how I used to pull them apart to eat them? I still did up until a few years ago. Haha! All growed up now! I eat them like a normal sandwich now.
The trip to West Point for a football game vs LaFayette when I was a freshman in high school. It was a gorgeous, crisp fall day and we took the Alpha Romeo. Gosh that was fun! And it was such a close game too!
You coming to visit me in Rochester for Daddy Daughter Dances. Christmas time! You and Mom always made Christmas special.
Driving around or talking a walk with you (most times driving around) when I was having a hard time with something. You have this way of reaching my logic and problem solving pathways in my brain better than anyone. And after Daddy time, somehow it was all better. Not perfect, but better, doable, I could move forward again.
Shakespeare in the park at Washington Park! That’s how I fell in love with Shakespeare. The ride there and back was just a bonus because it was more time with you.
All the times you and Mom visited me at Geneva College. Oh! That one time we all went to Darien Lake because AQ band had an event there! Remember our caricatures? I do. Still have mine.
There are so many more things I could say I remember. Most of all I remember you love me to pieces and I love you back, to pieces. May this message find you well rested and comforted in spirit AND in body. You’re my Daddy and I wouldn’t ever ask for another one. You’re prefect just the way you are. Thank you for all your love and encouragement through the decades. You are one epic man. I hug you through the miles. (Written on Father's Day 2020)
